Barça: Koundé, a move to the Premier League on the cards?
Having extended his contract until 2030 last August, could Jules Koundé leave FC Barcelona during the upcoming summer transfer window? A number of top English clubs are showing interest in the versatile French right-back. These include Manchester City, who were already in the running last year, as well as Liverpool and Chelsea.
It looks set to be a busy summer for Jules Koundé. Absent from the France squad due to a muscle injury, the versatile right-back will nevertheless – barring a relapse – start at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, his future at FC Barcelona could be in doubt. For, despite being a first-team regular in the eyes of Blaugrana manager Hansi Flick, the Bordeaux-trained player is being targeted by several European giants, particularly English ones.
Liverpool ready to splash the cash
Starting with Manchester City. Already in the running last summer, as revealed by Barcelona’s sporting director Deco, the Manchester club could try their luck again, according to Mundo Deportivo. This time, the door does not appear to be closed. Chelsea, who battled with Barça for his signature after his departure from Sevilla nearly four years ago, also have him in their sights. Not to mention Liverpool, who are not entirely convinced by Jeremie Frimpong as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s successor.
The Catalan daily even reports that the Reds are considering offering a massive sum, exceeding his estimated market value of €65 million, to sign him. The current La Liga leaders are not necessarily keen to sell, but they might be tempted by an offer they can’t refuse, given that their finances remain fragile and they could use this substantial sum to buy a striker this summer. To secure Julian Alvarez, whom Barça openly covets, at least that much will be required.
A player cut out for the Premier League?
It remains to be seen what the player himself wants; he has always said he is happy in Barcelona, but his profile could be a good fit for the Premier League. After four years of loyal service, the prospect of joining the world’s most attractive league would come as no surprise. In the meantime, his club can look to the future with confidence as it has plenty of options in that position: Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo are used to playing there, whilst João could be sold permanently by Al Hilal.
