Atlético: Griezmann’s time is up (official)

One of Atlético Madrid’s greatest legends is set to leave: the Colchoneros confirmed on Tuesday that Antoine Griezmann has moved to Orlando City. The French forward will head to the United States this summer.

It’s no secret to anyone now: next summer, Antoine Griezmann will indeed be joining Orlando City in the US, as has been expected for several weeks. The former France international will indeed be living the American dream he has always set for himself for the end of his career.

The Atlético Madrid forward turned down an immediate transfer in order to finish the season in Europe and help the Colchoneros achieve their objectives. But this does not call into question the 2018 World Cup winner’s move to Florida, which was made official on Tuesday.

Griezmann signs two-year deal with Orlando

The two clubs have announced that they have reached an agreement regarding the transfer. Under contract with Atlético until June 2027, Griezmann has been released from the final year of his contract in recognition of his service. The 35-year-old striker has signed until the end of the 2027–2028 season, with an option for a third season, taking him through to 2029. He is expected to earn a salary similar to that received at Atlético (around €10 million per year) and to reclaim his favourite number 7 shirt.

“I’m really excited to start this new chapter in my career with Orlando. From my very first discussions with the club, I sensed great ambition and a clear vision for the future, and that really appealed to me. I can’t wait to make Orlando my new home, to meet the fans, to feel the energy of the stadium and to give everything I’ve got to help the team achieve great things,” Griezmann told the club’s media.

Griezmann emotional about his departure

At Atlético, Griezmann will aim to bring a ten-year spell – across all spells – to a fitting conclusion. The fourth-most capped player (488 appearances) and the club’s all-time leading goalscorer (211 goals), the former France international will look to add to his trophy haul. After the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, followed by the Europa League and the European Super Cup in 2018, the player who briefly played for FC Barcelona could still add a Copa del Rey (with the final against Real Sociedad to come) and possibly a Champions League title (quarter-finals against Barça).

For now, Griezmann has assured the Madrid fans of his unwavering commitment until the end of the season. “It’s hard to put into words how I feel, because this club is my home and you are my family. It’s been an incredible journey, full of unforgettable matches, goals, joy and a passion that only those who live and breathe Atlético can understand. But let’s leave the future for now, because I’m not leaving just yet,” he said in comments published on the Madrid club’s official website.

“I have two months left in this shirt, two months to give my all at home and away, to lift the Copa del Rey and dream of going as far as possible in the Champions League. We still have plenty of opportunities to be happy. I want every minute I have left here to be a tribute to this badge. The best is yet to come. We’ll do it as we always have: together. My present will remain red and white until the very last breath of this 2026 season. And my heart will remain so forever,” Griezmann continued. Two months to finish writing his legend…
