PSG v Liverpool: the editorial team’s predictions

In the Champions League quarter-finals, PSG take on Liverpool this Wednesday evening at the Parc des Princes in a highly anticipated clash. Here, the Maxifoot editorial team shares its predictions.

Last year, PSG knocked Liverpool out at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16, thanks to a superb performance from Donnarumma in the penalty shoot-out. This time, according to the editorial team, PSG should take the lead in the first leg. What do you think? What’s your prediction for this clash between PSG and Liverpool?

“The main danger for Paris Saint-Germain would be to approach this match with too much confidence, given the contrasting form of the two teams. But judging by the Parisian side’s comments, that doesn’t seem to be the case. If PSG take this match seriously and continue to be clinical, I can’t see Liverpool holding out at the Parc des Princes.”

“Given the current form of both teams, I see Paris Saint-Germain having the upper hand in this home leg. With their control of the ball, the Parisians should put pressure on the opposition’s goal and make the difference thanks to a Dembélé in top form. On the counter-attack, the Reds might manage to score a goal to keep their hopes alive ahead of the second leg.”

“Liverpool have suffered four defeats and one draw in their last seven matches. It’s not exactly a glorious record! But the Champions League is a different kettle of fish. The match could be a bit more evenly balanced, although Paris should come out on top in the end.”

“Unsurprisingly, I think PSG will take a strong step towards qualification as early as Wednesday. A year after the Reds’ shock win at the Parc, I don’t think they’ll pull off the same feat again. Paris will logically dominate the match and win comfortably, though by a smaller margin than against Manchester City on Saturday (4-0).”

“I can’t see any scenario that doesn’t see PSG heading for victory. Barring an extraordinary performance from Mamardashvili — like Alisson’s at the Parc last season — I reckon Paris are solid enough to take a real step towards qualification as early as Wednesday.”

PSG 3-0 Liverpool (by Eric Bethsy)

“In Champions League mode, PSG will outclass Liverpool. The Reds will surely spend most of the match in their own half trying to contain the opposition’s waves of attacks. But their defensive frailty could cost them dearly, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Parisians find the breakthrough fairly early on.”

“I was already feeling very pessimistic about Liverpool ahead of the weekend, and the thrashing the Reds suffered against Manchester City confirms what I thought: Paris are going to have a field day. I expect the same result as last year at the Parc des Princes, but with the French champions looking far more clinical and winning with ease.”
