Manchester City: Cherki, a maestro in a league of his own
The match-winner in Sunday’s clash with Arsenal (2-1), having previously tormented Chelsea, Rayan Cherki has truly stepped up a gear. At 22, the Manchester City playmaker displays a maturity and sets of statistics that make Christophe Dugarry’s comments seem almost out of this world.
The talent has always been there, but in Pep Guardiola he has found the ideal coach to bring it out even more. Rayan Cherki (22) is no longer just a ball-juggler: he has become an X-factor capable of turning a title race on its head.
His standout performances against the London heavyweights prove that he has finally harnessed his genius to serve pure effectiveness, shattering the notion of a player who is ‘not effective enough’ or incapable of rising to the level of France’s best footballers.
A unique talent… who has become effective
Fundamentally, Christophe Dugarry isn’t entirely wrong when he highlights the shortcomings of the playmaker who came through the ranks at OL. Cherki isn’t an attacking machine: he presses less than others, lacks the work rate of a Michael Olise, and his style of play retains a degree of freedom that irritates those who want everything to be strictly regimented. Even Guardiola had to crack down, publicly asking him to stop dropping too deep and to stay in the areas where he causes the most damage. Yet, to reduce his case to a matter of discipline is to overlook the fact that Cherki offers something else. In an increasingly formulaic game, his ability to invent and break expected rhythms is an absolute rarity that justifies, precisely, looking at him differently.
The response on the pitch has, in fact, seriously undermined the RMC pundit’s argument. By recording a ‘double-double’ this season (10 goals and 13 assists in 44 matches), the Tricolore proves he can combine flair with the cold hard facts. Joining the very exclusive circle of players with over 10 goals and 10 assists in the top five leagues — alongside Vinicius Junior and Lamine Yamal — is no mere whim of a ‘one-man show’. It is the hallmark of a player who, despite a two-month absence, has managed to become one of the Old Continent’s most prolific playmakers whilst remaining a player driven by emotion.
E. Haaland – “we’ve done a very good deal with Lyon”
This transformation is the result of shrewd management on the part of his manager. Guardiola has played him at both ends of the spectrum, often starting him before dropping him to keep him on his toes, forcing him to come to terms with his limitations so that he could really shine in the big games. This demanding approach is paying off: against Chelsea (0-3) and then Arsenal (2-1), Cherki was not only a joy to watch, he was City’s driving force. By agreeing to play closer to Erling Haaland, the Sky Blue – who produced a brilliant slalom run to break the deadlock in the Premier League ‘final’ – has transformed his raw talent into a weapon of mass destruction, proving that he now possesses the work ethic and mentality needed to last at the top.
This step up to the very highest level has, moreover, been endorsed by his peers, starting with the Norwegian ‘cyborg’. After the crucial victory against the Gunners, Haaland made no secret of his admiration when speaking to Canal+: ‘We’ve done a very good deal with Lyon; we’re very lucky. Rayan has something very special.’ By consistently drawing two or three defenders to create space, as he did with his two brilliant assists against Chelsea, Cherki has become the ideal partner for the Scandinavian centre-forward. While he may not yet be a complete player, he is already a rare talent, and as the season enters its final stretch, he is exactly what City needed to keep their title hopes alive.

1. Bayern crowned champions
For the 35th time in its history, Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga! By beating Stuttgart 4-2, the Bavarian club officially secured another league title. Trailing early on after Fuhrich opened the scoring (21st minute), the Munich side turned the match around in the space of six minutes thanks to goals from Guerreiro (31st), Jackson (33rd) and Davies (37th). In the second half, Kane (52′) also got in on the act. Andres’s goal (89′) in the dying moments made no difference. With a 15-point lead over second-placed Dortmund, Bayern cannot be caught at the top of the table.
2. Cherki on the scoresheet, a shock for City!
In the race for the Premier League title, Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-1! After hitting the post early on, Cherki (16′) broke the deadlock following a flurry of attacking play, but the Gunners quickly equalised through Havertz (18′) following a massive blunder by Donnarumma. In the second half, the two sides traded blows with a Haaland effort hitting the post, two saves from Donnarumma against Havertz and Martinelli, then a shot from Eze hitting the post! And finally, Haaland (65′) secured the win for the Citizens! Despite a header from Gabriel hitting the post, and a tense final few minutes marred by a clash between the Norwegian and the Brazilian, the Sky Blues held on for the win. Still second in the table, City, with a game in hand, are now just three points behind leaders Arsenal.
3. Rennes’ big win.
In the race for the Champions League, Rennes pulled off a fine result by beating Strasbourg 3-0 in Ligue 1. With a reshuffled Alsatian side providing plenty of help, the Bretons made the difference through Lepaul (20th), Embolo (50th) and then Al-Tamari (52nd). With this victory, Rennes climb to 5th place, just one point behind Lyon in 3rd. In 8th place, RCSA risk coasting through the rest of the league season to focus on the Conference League and the Coupe de France.
4. Liverpool snatch victory in the derby!
Following their Champions League elimination against Paris Saint-Germain (0-2, 0-2) on Tuesday, Liverpool secured a last-gasp victory away at Everton (2-1) in the Premier League. The Reds had taken the lead through Salah (29′). But after the break, the Toffees equalised through Beto (54′). Then, in the dying moments, Van Dijk (90+11′) secured the win for his side with a header from a corner! In the table, Liverpool remain in 5th place.
5. Rabiot propels Milan to 2nd place.
A fine result for AC Milan! The Lombardy club won away at Hellas Verona (1-0) in Serie A. In the first half, the Rossoneri broke the deadlock through Rabiot (41st), set up well by Leao. After that, the Milan side were able to count on a fine performance from Maignan, who notably won a one-on-one against Belghali. Thanks to this victory, Milan reclaim second place in the table ahead of Napoli, who are level on points in third.
6. Former Ligue 1 players bring joy to Juve.
A fine result for Juventus. Beating Bologna 2-0 in Serie A, the Old Lady made the difference thanks to former Ligue 1 players: David (2nd) found the net from a Kalulu pass, then Thuram (57th) doubled the lead. This win allows Juve, in 4th, to move five points clear of Como, in 5th. A precious victory in the race for the Champions League.
7. Aston Villa win a mad match.
In the Premier League, Aston Villa pulled off a thrilling 4-3 win against Sunderland! The Villans looked set to run away with the game thanks to a brace from Watkins (2nd, 36th) and a goal from Rogers (46th), set up by Watkins, but the Black Cats fought back with goals from Rigg (9th), Hume (86th) and Isidor (87th). Then, finally, Abraham (90+3) snatched victory for his side at the death! Still fourth in the table, Aston Villa are now level on points with third-placed Manchester United.
8. A frustrating draw for Nantes, Halilhodzic sent off!
In the battle to avoid relegation, FC Nantes were held to a last-gasp draw by Brest (1-1) in Ligue 1. Right from the start of the match, Les Canaris took the lead through Mohamed (9th). Afterwards, Nantes, reduced to ten men following Tabibou’s sending-off (65th), held out for a long time before finally succumbing in the dying moments to a goal from Chardonnet (90+6th). It is worth noting Halilhodzic’s outburst, furious after being shown a red card… Still 17th in the table, FCN are five points behind 16th-placed AJ Auxerre.
