Olympique de Marseille dominated throughout and easily outclassed Bayeux (9-0) on Tuesday in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France. In the next round, the Phocéens will take on Stade Rennais.
Marseille showed respect for their Regional 1 opponents. In total control, Olympique de Marseille rolled over Bayeux (9-0) on Tuesday in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France at the Stade Michel d’Ornano.
With their overwhelming dominance, the Phocéens made the difference through Angel Gomes, Hamed Junior Traoré, Mason Greenwood, Amine Gouiri, CJ Egan-Riley and Neal Maupay. In the quarter-finals, OM will host Stade Rennais at the Vélodrome.
Marseille quickly found the breakthrough
After a beautiful tribute to Rolland Courbis, Marseille were immediately dangerous with two shots from Murillo and Emerson saved by Lecanu. Encouraged by the crowd, the amateurs managed to hold out, showing positive aggression in their challenges. But OM logically found the breakthrough with a cross from Murillo picked up by Gomes, who scored into an empty net (0-1, 13′). Without forcing the issue, the Olympians rolled on and Traoré took advantage of a failed intervention by Lecanu and then a missed clearance by Lemasson to double the lead (0-2, 19′).
Overwhelmed, Bayeux conceded another goal on the counterattack with a well-placed shot from Greenwood following a pass from O’Riley (0-3, 26′). While Lecanu prevented further damage by blocking Greenwood, Gouiri missed the opportunity to join in the fun by squandering a perfect pass from Traoré. A few seconds later, the Algerian, in a similar move, was this time effective in converting the Ivorian’s gift (0-4, 32′). Until the break, OM controlled the game without overdoing it.
In management mode, OM had fun
As soon as they returned from the dressing room, Roberto De Zerbi’s men hammered home their advantage with a gift from Gouiri to Greenwood, who scored into an empty net (0-5, 49′). Bayeux were in dire straits, under threat from every attack, and conceded again when Gouiri latched onto a cross from Greenwood (0-6, 55′). Marseille slowed the pace of the game and switched to control mode, stringing together a series of passes.
Physically exhausted, Bayeux were unable to trouble De Lange, despite a slight scare when Péan’s volley flew into the stands… In contrast, Marseille were still dangerous, and Egan-Riley took advantage of a Greenwood corner to score with a header (0-7, 80′). Serious until the end and showing respect for Bayeux, OM concluded this festival with two final goals from Maupay, assisted by Murillo (0-8, 86′) and then Greenwood, assisted by Pavard (0-9, 90′).
