Recently sacked by Real Madrid, coach Xabi Alonso remains highly sought-after on the market. Liverpool has already made initial contact with the Spanish coach with a view to him succeeding manager Arne Slot in the future.
Xabi Alonso’s adventure at Real Madrid ended in failure. Appointed last summer after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, the coach was sacked by Los Merengues on 12 January due to disappointing results.
Despite this failed experience on the bench at the Bernabéu, the Spanish coach remains highly sought-after on the European market.
Liverpool has already contacted Xabi Alonso
Now a free agent, the 44-year-old was recently approached by Liverpool, according to information published by the Madrid daily AS on Sunday. Faced with the uncertain future of Reds manager Arne Slot, the English club’s directors, without discussing an immediate appointment, wanted to gauge the former midfielder’s interest in a future collaboration.
Having played for Liverpool from 2004 to 2009, Alonso has never hidden his attachment to the club, and discussions between the two parties have been positive. The reigning English champions found this initial contact reassuring, as the Spaniard is their number one choice to succeed Slot in the future.
Slot, an uncertain future
And inevitably, the question arises: could there be a change during the season? After a successful 2024-2025 season marked by the Premier League title, the Dutchman has had a difficult few months at Liverpool. Although results have improved in recent weeks (7 wins, 6 draws and 1 defeat), Slot’s record remains insufficient (currently 4th in the PL) and his team still shows signs of nervousness, as evidenced by Saturday’s defeat against Bournemouth (2-3). Under contract until June 2027, the Dutchman may feel under pressure from the threat of Xabi Alonso.
