Bayern: Kompany’s strong response to Mourinho after the Vinicius incident!
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany did not appreciate Benfica coach José Mourinho’s media stance on the Vinicius Junior incident. The Belgian coach criticised the comments made by his Portuguese counterpart.
José Mourinho’s arguments do not hold water… During Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday, Madrid winger Vinicius Junior denounced racist insults from his Lisbon counterpart Gianluca Prestianni. Without really taking sides, the Portuguese club’s coach nevertheless surprised everyone by criticising the Brazilian for his celebration.
This was unacceptable to Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany.
Kompany criticises Mourinho!
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Belgian coach regretted the Special One’s media stance, deploring his criticism of the Brazilian. “For me, what happened after the match is even worse. José Mourinho attacked Vini’s character by mentioning his celebration in order to discredit him. It was a huge mistake in terms of his leadership,” said the former Manchester City defender.
In addition, Kompany criticised another – very simplistic – argument put forward by Mourinho in response to this incident: Benfica cannot be racist because Eusébio is the best player in the Lisbon club’s history. “On top of that, Mourinho mentioned Eusébio’s name. He said that Benfica couldn’t be racist because their best player ever was Eusébio. Do you know what black players had to endure in the 1960s? Was he there to accompany Eusébio to every away game and see what he went through? Using his name to make an argument in the Vini case…”, fumed the Munich manager.
The Belgian sees a mistake on the Portuguese manager’s part
Without wanting to put Mourinho on trial for this statement, Kompany nevertheless insisted that it was a communication error. With the hope that we can soon move forward, all in the same direction, to fight racism. ‘I’ve met a hundred people who have worked with Mourinho, and I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about him. All his players adore him. I understand who he is, I understand that he fights for his club. I know deep down that he’s a good person,’ he emphasised.
‘I don’t need to judge him on that. But I also know what I’ve heard. I understand what he did, but he made a mistake. I hope it won’t happen again in the future and that we can all move forward together,’ said the 39-year-old. A powerful statement.
