Arsenal: Dowman, the night that could (already) make him a legend

After making a decisive impact against Everton (2-0), Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history on Saturday. Above all, he gave Arsenal what could prove to be a decisive advantage at the top of the table.

The Emirates Stadium witnessed a rare moment on Saturday evening. Having long struggled to make the difference against Everton, Arsenal finally snatched a 2-0 victory in the dying moments thanks to a decisive substitute appearance by a teenager: Max Dowman.
At just 16 years and 73 days old, the Englishman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, sealing a victory that could prove crucial in the title race.

A substitution that changed everything

When Mikel Arteta decided to bring on Dowman in the 74th minute, Arsenal were already dominating but had failed to beat Jordan Pickford. The Gunners had fired 18 shots at the opposition’s goal without finding the net, in a long-stalled encounter where Everton even came close to surprising the league leaders, saved by a post from Dwight McNeil’s strike.
The arrival of the young attacking midfielder immediately changed the dynamic. His pace, his willingness to take risks and his ability to provoke brought new energy to a team that had previously been lacking inspiration. And in the 89th minute, the turning point arrived: Dowman delivered a dangerous cross to the far post. Pickford failed to deal with it and the ball fell to Viktor Gyökeres, who finished to open the score

The record-breaking goal

But the story doesn’t end there. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Everton threw everything at it and Pickford pushed forward. After winning the ball back, Dowman found himself through on goal. The young prodigy slotted home calmly to make it 2-0 (90+7), thereby erasing James Vaughan from the record books, who had held the record since 10 April 2005 for scoring a goal for Everton at the age of 16 years and 270 days.
The youngster struggled to contain his emotion as he made his way back to the dressing room to the cheers of a captivated crowd. “It was a beautiful moment,” summed up his manager Mikel Arteta. “Especially given the way the goal was built up: we had 10, 15 seconds to savour what was about to happen. It was magical, all the players together, jumping, the crowd…”

A decisive step towards the title?

This special moment came at the perfect time. At just 16 years of age, Dowman has propelled Arsenal to a nine-point lead over Manchester City, who were held to a draw by West Ham (1-1) later in the day. This may well be the decisive turning point in the race for the title in England.
If Arsenal were to win their first league title since 2004 and their season were to be summed up in a single moment, it is likely that many would remember this one. “What we do is create memories, moments,” says Arteta. “I’m sure that for many years to come, the people who were here will say: ‘I was at the stadium that day, when that 16-year-old lad scored such a crucial goal at that stage of the season.’”
