With just under a year remaining on his contract at Manchester City, Rodri recently hinted at a possible move to Real Madrid. However, according to reports in AS, the Merengues are not interested.
Who will succeed Toni Kroos and Luka Modric? Since the German’s departure in 2024, followed by the Croatian’s a year later, Real Madrid have failed to find that rare gem: a world-class player capable of stabilising their midfield.
One man, however, seemed destined to take on this role: Rodri, 29, a Spanish international and Ballon d’Or winner in 2024. All the more so as Manchester City’s metronome recently opened the door to a return to the Spanish capital, this time in the white shirt.
Rodri opens the door to Real
“I have a year left on my contract, so at some point we’ll have to sit down and talk with Manchester City. Even though I played for Atlético Madrid (2007–2013 in the youth teams and then during the 2018–2019 season, ed.), Real Madrid isn’t a closed door for me, you can’t turn your back on the best clubs,” the player, who has 59 caps and four goals for La Roja, recently said in an interview with Onda Cero. A hint?
Unfortunately for him, Rodri may never receive the call he’s been waiting for, as, according to AS, Real Madrid are not interested. Our colleagues report that both the players and the Madrid management have deep respect for the Spanish midfielder, though this is unlikely to result in a transfer this summer. “Their paths will remain separate,” the newspaper states, adding that the sporting directorate is looking for a different type of player in midfield.
City want to extend his contract
This information should be taken with a pinch of salt: just a few days ago, Marca – the other Madrid-based daily – was reporting strong interest from the Bernabéu in Rodri. Who is telling the truth? It’s hard to say, but the recent rumours have prompted Manchester City to react by offering the Madrid-born player a contract extension. According to Sky Sports, the Sky Blues hope to reach an agreement on extending his deal soon.
The rumours linking him with Real Madrid could therefore work in Rodri’s favour in his discussions with City. It remains to be seen what the player’s real intentions are. Given his recent comments at a press conference, it is hard not to detect a slight desire to return home, and what’s more, to the biggest club in the world. Especially as the Citizens seem to be at the end of a cycle, with an uncertain future for Pep Guardiola. Just like that of his metronome, ultimately…
