OM: Benatia’s departure, the profile of the future president, search for an investor… McCourt’s major announcements
Following a turbulent period behind the scenes at Olympique de Marseille, owner Frank McCourt has provided an update on the club’s structure. Medhi Benatia is set to leave, the profile for the future president is taking shape… and the door is open to a new investor.
Both on the pitch and behind the scenes, the last few weeks have been turbulent at Olympique de Marseille. Owner Frank McCourt has taken advantage of the respite offered by the international break to take stock of several pressing issues, including the forthcoming reorganisation of the club’s structure.
McCourt confirms Benatia’s departure
Unsurprisingly, the American businessman has confirmed that Medhi Benatia will leave at the end of the season. Following his make-believe resignation in February – the Moroccan had stormed out before being reinstated two days later with expanded powers – the director of football will indeed be stepping down at the end of the season. Benatia has, however, agreed to see out his contract until June.
“After receiving his resignation, I personally asked him to extend his notice period and I thank him for agreeing, as it was essential to see the season through. Medhi is an excellent sporting director. He will stay until the end of the season and then that will be it. That is his wish and that is what we have agreed,” McCourt told *Le Journal du Dimanche.
To oversee the whole operation, a new chairman will be needed, as Pablo Longoria has been definitively ruled out. The Bostonian outlined his ideal candidate: “My preference is for someone who knows France and Marseille well; I think it’s crucial to understand the club’s culture. The person must be a high-calibre and experienced manager. I hope we’ll announce them before the end of the season,” he added.
McCourt opens the door to a new investor
Another significant issue raised by McCourt: the question of a new investor. The 72-year-old businessman, who has owned OM for nearly 10 years, is looking for support. He has clearly opened the door to the arrival of a financial partner. “I think it’s time to start this process because I really want Marseille to take it to the next level,” he said.
“Reaching the highest level will require further investment. We want to find the right strategic partner to make this happen. It’s still too early to say more; we’re considering our options and getting organised, but that’s the mindset we’re in,” McCourt continued. Marseille are not for sale, but the club is seeking financial backing to help it take the next step. Interested parties should take note.
