Transfer news: Nwaneri, doubts over his future at Arsenal…
On loan since the winter transfer window, Arsenal attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is having a rather mixed spell at Olympique de Marseille. Is this enough to cast doubt on his future with the Gunners?
Ethan Nwaneri probably expected a different experience at Olympique de Marseille. On loan from Arsenal since this winter, with no option to buy, the attacking midfielder has shown flashes of brilliance, such as his goal against Lens (3-1) in Ligue 1 on his debut, but has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at the Marseille club.
Above all, his time at OM took a turn following the departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had played a key role in bringing him to the club. Under new manager Habib Beye, the Englishman has had to settle for a substitute role and was marked by his missed decisive penalty in the elimination against Toulouse (2-2, 3-4 on penalties) in the Coupe de France.
Nwaneri: an uncertain future at Arsenal?
In England, Nwaneri’s struggles at the Canebière are causing concern. Some observers openly question the value of the youngster’s loan spell at Marseille. Above all, his inconsistent performances at OM are raising questions about his future at Arsenal… Indeed, according to reports in The Telegraph on Tuesday, Nwaneri’s future at the Gunners – where he is under contract until June 2030 – is very uncertain.
Although the current Premier League leaders are well aware of the 18-year-old’s potential, there is no guarantee that manager Mikel Arteta will be able to find a place for him in his squad for the 2026–2027 season. The Spaniard already has plenty of options in that position and must also consider the development of prodigy Max Dowman. The London club could therefore consider letting Nwaneri leave to raise funds, depending on the offers on the market.
The Englishman is already playing for high stakes
For the time being, Arsenal have not yet decided on the way forward in this matter. Before making a final decision during the next summer transfer window, the London club’s management will naturally be keeping a close eye on Nwaneri’s progress at Marseille. It is up to him to turn things around at OM in this final sprint to make an impression on Arsenal…
