Transfer Window – OM: Is a major clear-out of key players on the cards?
Following a very eventful 2025–2026 season, Olympique de Marseille is preparing to embark on a new chapter during the upcoming summer transfer window. Several key players from the current squad are therefore expected to leave the Marseille-based club.
At Olympique de Marseille, things move very quickly. And certainties change from one year to the next. Without even waiting for the conclusion of an already eventful 2025-2026 season, the Marseille club is preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window.
During the upcoming transfer window, the side currently fourth in Ligue 1 aims to launch a new era, and several key players are expected to leave, according to reports in the regional daily La Provence on Monday.
Rulli, Balerdi and Højbjerg on their way out?
Worn down by a gruelling season, goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are two serious candidates for a move away. Having underperformed in recent months, the Argentine, under contract until June 2027, and the Dane, under contract until June 2028, are expected to decide, in agreement with the club’s management, to explore the options available on the market.
Affected by the events of this season, Rulli has seen a clear decline in his performances in 2026, and ending his time at the club appears to be the preferred solution for both sides. For his part, Højbjerg knows he is being courted in Italy, notably by Juventus, and could take advantage of this situation to sign one last big contract. As for Marseille, his sale would bring in a tidy sum and help reduce the wage bill.
Deemed to be at the end of his cycle despite a contract running until June 2028, centre-back Leonardo Balerdi is also likely to leave if a good offer comes in. Despite a dip in popularity, the Argentine is also expected to bring in a significant amount of cash. OM would also have liked to cut their losses with Geoffrey Kondogbia, who is under contract until June 2027, but the midfielder, who commands a substantial salary, is unlikely to leave given the limited interest in his services…
Greenwood, a bit of a mystery…
At the same time, there is considerable uncertainty surrounding the future of striker Mason Greenwood. Under contract until June 2029, the Englishman is OM’s most valuable asset and could represent ‘the ideal bargaining chip’ to balance the club’s books.
Naturally, Marseille, which holds 60% of his registration rights (potentially 65% should the club qualify for the Champions League), has no intention of selling the 24-year-old short and has not yet decided on his future. Why? Because there is no guarantee that a wealthy club will take the risk of making a significant investment in the former Manchester United player due to the controversy surrounding his domestic violence case in 2022. In any case, as always, it looks set to be a hot summer on the Canebière.
