Liverpool: Salah and the Reds bounce back ahead of the return leg against PSG

After three consecutive defeats, Liverpool bounced back in style with a 2-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. The Reds, spurred on by an in-form Mohamed Salah, put in a reassuring performance three days ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, where they are hoping to turn the tie around.

Following the thrashing suffered against Manchester City (0-4) in the FA Cup, then the disastrous and terribly lacklustre performance in attack at the Parc des Princes (0-2) on Wednesday in the Champions League, Liverpool bounced back in style by beating Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

This revival is a welcome one for the Reds, who had won just one of their last six matches and had failed to win a league game since late February. This return to form could boost the confidence of the reigning English champions, three days ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool soar thanks to their wingers

With a squad that had been only slightly reshuffled at kick-off, Liverpool generally made a good impression in the first half. The breakthrough came down the wings, courtesy of two players who hadn’t featured against PSG on Wednesday. Rio Ngumoha first lit up Anfield, opening the scoring with a superb curling shot into the far corner, after causing havoc in the penalty area.

The 17-year-old Red scored his second Premier League goal of the season, following his last-gasp strike in the 3-2 win at Newcastle last August. A lively presence throughout the match, Ngumoha also set up the second goal, scored four minutes later by Mohamed Salah. Surprisingly left on the bench in Paris three days earlier, the Egyptian forward also curled a shot into the far corner, after capitalising on a deflection from Cody Gakpo.

Paris, what if?

Cheered on by Anfield from the very start of the match, the player who is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season returned the affection shown by the fans in his own way, delivering one of his finest performances of the season. Less dominant but generally composed after the break, the Reds managed to capitalise on their lead to return to winning ways for the first time since 18 March. Now the whole of Liverpool wants to believe in the impossible: overturning the Parisian mountain on Tuesday. In an Anfield on top form, with Salah back to his best… Why not?
